On November 24, the Department of Energy announced funding for 16 regional smart grid demonstration projects. The DOE has selected the Pacific Northwest team, including Idaho Falls Power, for a $178 million smart grid demo with half the project funding to come from the DOE through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The project's team - led by Battelle - includes energy providers, utilities, vendors and research organizations and involves customers in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming.
Idaho Falls Power’s projects will include sophisticated enhancements to transmission and distribution systems, testing of distribution system automation and management, commercial and industrial load reduction, automated metering infrastructure deployment and devices to raise customer awareness about energy use. Idaho Falls Power’s share of the funding is nearly $8.2 million. Idaho Falls Power intends to involve the Idaho National Laboratory and higher education institutions in its project. There will be opportunities for customer volunteers as well - those opportunities will be announced as they are available.
