Smart Grid Load Control Test Areas

This map highlights two areas in which Idaho Falls Power intends to test technology that will allow the utility to shed electric load during times of heavy electric use, which will help the city avoid making expensive wholesale power purchases.

In the area highlighted in red, IFP will provide 250 volunteers with a device that will allow the utility to briefly power down the home's electric water heater during peak usage periods. Participants will also receive an in-home display. IFP intends to conduct the tests in such a way that the consumer will not be adversely affected and hopefully not even notice the event.  However, all volunteers will be able to easily override the event if they so choose.  Notice of the event will be conveyed via the in-home monitor.

In the area highlighted in yellow, 250 volunteers will receive programmable thermostats that will allow IFP to briefly adjust the heating or air conditioning thermostat setting during peak usage periods. Again, IFP intends to conduct the tests in such a way that the customer will minimally inconvenienced. If the temperature does become uncomfortable, though, the customer can easily override the event at any time. Notice will also be conveyed using the in-home monitor.

The new load control devices and the technology that powers them have proven to be effective without inconveniencing customers, and if implemented here, could play a large role in keeping IFP's rates among the lowest in the nation.

Volunteers will play a crucial role in helping to determine the best and most effective options available to help us meet our mission.  Customers should notice immediate benefits in the form of lower bills.  Studies have shown that customers who are more aware of their energy usage consume less energy.  In theory, its a win-win situation for both the customer and IFP, but we want to hear form you--the good, the bad and the ugly--throughout the process.

Most customers living in these areas will  receive more information about these devices. If you do not receive any information in the mail, or if you have questions or are interested in becoming a volunteer, please call 612-8430 or email ifpinfo@ifpower.org.
