Tree Limb Responsibilities

Who's responsible when a tree limb takes out a power line?

The property owner is responsible for clearing the power lines that run from the transformer to the home or building. He or she is also responsible for any damage to the service mast, which is the pole that attaches the service line to the house or building. Idaho Falls Power will disconnect and reconnect service lines at no charge while any tree trimming or repair work is under way. IFP doesn't provide repairs to damaged service lines or masts regardless of the cause, however; the customer will need to call a licensed electrician to handle such repairs before we can reconnect power. IFP is responsible for all other lines and we routinely trim trees, branches and other obstructions that interfere with the operation or maintenance of primary electric lines (those that run from power pole to power pole) or equipment.
