Pre-requisites:
1. All candidates must be at least 15 years old
2. All candidates must pass the Swimming Test consisting of:
- Timed Event: completion within 1 minute-40 seconds.
Swim 20 yards of Front Crawl or Breast Stroke, surface dive 7-10ft and retrieve 10-lb weight, return to the surface and swim back to the starting point carrying the weight in both hands while keeping face above water (swimming on back with whip or rotary kick) and exit the water without using the ladder or steps.
- Continuous 300 yard swim in the following order:
100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and strong supporting kick.
100 yards of breast-stroke with proper stroke sequence and strong kick
100 yards of front crawl and/or breast-stroke, any combination with good breathing and kick.
*A full refund will be given to anyone who does not pass the skills test.
NOTE: Lifeguard Training candidates must have a good grasp of stroke mechanics and must swim the required strokes with good rhythmic breathing and a strong, well developed supporting kick. There is no time limit on the 300yd swim but candidates must have the endurance to swim continuously without stopping. The instructor may stop the candidate at any time during the pre-test if the candidate’s skills are determined to be insufficient for the class.
If the candidate has not had formal swimming lessons past YMCA Minnow level or ARC Level 4, it is most likely that the candidate will NOT be able to pass the swimming pre-test.
Lifeguarding is an inherently dangerous and skilled profession and candidates for Lifeguard Training MUST be strong and proficient swimmers. Candidates may ask for an evaluation before taking the pre-test. Please call the Aquatic Center to make an appointment. Private Lessons are also available to prepare candidates for taking the pre-test and class.
