Citizen Request DetailCitizen Request StatusIDCR-87 Submitted 03/10/10 Status Completed 03/10/10 Department Police Department Subject Stop Sign/Stop Light Violations Description Why are stop sign and stop light violations not more rigorously enforced? I would guess that at least 30 to 50% of the intersections I stop at have someone "running the yellow and/or red lights". I have seen police cars sitting at the intersections and doing nothing about it. These infractions are a definite safety hazard for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Notes The Idaho Falls Police department is very concerned with the safety of the public. The traffic division conducts several “stop light” saturations throughout the year along with daily traffic enforcement in order to cut down on the number of traffic infractions in our area. An aggressive driving saturation will take place in April of this year. You mention running “Yellow” lights which is not illegal. A yellow light is merely a warning to the driver that the signal will soon turn red. Any driver who enters an intersection on a solid red light is guilty of an infraction. Idaho Statute 49-802. There may be reasons that an officer does not stop a vehicle for a traffic infraction. If the officer is in route to a call that has a higher priority than the infraction, or if pulling out into traffic causes an even greater safety concern than the original violation, the officer may try to get a license plate number or continue on his original path. The officer may not have even seen the violation if his/her attention was elsewhere. If you see an officer that you believe is not fulfilling his/her duty, you can call the Idaho Falls Police department and talk to a supervisor. Thank you for your concerns! Sgt.
