The primary purpose of the Traffic Unit is to reduce traffic accidents and make Idaho Falls as safe a place to drive, ride a bike and walk as possible. The Traffic Unit is comprised of 6 officers and their Sergeant that handle the traffic issues and complaints that come into the police department.
They are the primary responders when available to automobile crashes and work to get dangerous drivers off the streets, and our community outreach efforts bring our officers out to speak at driver education classes, and to promote driving safety training at community events.
The Traffic Unit targets areas that are known for aggressive driving and will also work chronic community traffic complaints, school zone violations and conduct pedestrian emphasis. They also conduct major crash investigations where injuries or fatalities occur.
The officers drive marked and unmarked vehicles that are equipped with the latest in moving radar and LIDAR speed measurement technologies, digital video systems, and on-board mobile data computer with e-ticketing software.
