The Idaho Falls Fire Department was dispatched to the 600 block of Garfield, just east of Central Park, for a gas leak that was reported at approximately 12:30 p.m. today. Intermountain Gas, Idaho Falls Power and the Idaho Falls Police Department were also dispatched.
Idaho Falls Power turned off the power from N Freeman Avenue to N. Fanning Avenue and from Garfield Street to Gladstone Street as a safety precaution. Because of the colder temperatures, residents who live in that area were encouraged to seek alternative places to stay until the leak was repaired and the power turned back on. Dispatch sent out an AlertSense public safety notification.
As the leak occurred in the middle of the day, only a few individuals who were home at the time had to be evacuated as a safety precaution. Idaho Falls School District 91 was notified, but the issue was resolved before the students returned home from school.
There were no injuries. The cause of the leak is not known at this time.
