[ARCHIVED] 17th Street & Hitt Road Intersection Improvements Begin Monday

AltTextHK Contractors will begin construction on the 17th Street and Hitt Road (25th East) intersection on Monday, April 10, 2017.

The cities of Idaho Falls and Ammon will host a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m. The ceremony will be at the southwest corner of the intersection. Parking is available in the Red Robin parking lot.

The project, jointly sponsored by the City of Idaho Falls and the City of Ammon, includes widening of the intersection to add a second left-turn lane on all four approaches and dedicated right-turn lanes on the northbound, southbound, and eastbound approaches. Median improvements will be made on Hitt Road between 17th Street and 25th Street and on 17th Street between Ashment Avenue and Hitt Road.

The reconstruction activities also include installing water, storm and sewer systems as well as curb, gutter and sidewalk. These improvements will be followed by milling the existing pavement, installing a new traffic signal, lighting, landscaping and sprinkler systems.  Final steps will include a plant mix overlay and seal coating.

The total shared construction cost is approximately $1.6 million.

Rocky Mountain Power began relocating power poles in October 2016 in anticipation of the project, and Idaho Falls Power relocated an additional eight power poles in March of 2017.   A public meeting regarding the project was held at Eastern Idaho Technical College in November 2016.

In addition to the work jointly sponsored and funded by the two cities, the City of Idaho Falls will fund the extension of the milling and overlay work on 17th Street westward to Woodruff Avenue.

At least one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction on 17th Street and on Hitt Road throughout the duration of the project.  There will also be full turn movements in every direction at the intersection.

The project duration is approximately three months.

Barring unforeseen conditions, all local businesses will be accessible during construction activities. However, short-duration closures of individual accesses will be necessary and coordinated accordingly to accommodate the project schedule.

Please watch for equipment and workers, follow all traffic signs and flaggers, and reduce speeds to posted limits.

We appreciate the community’s patience during this project. For questions, contact HK Contractors at (208) 523-6600 or City of Idaho Falls Public Works at (208) 612-8250.
