IDAHO FALLS – It’s time to sharpen your skates as the Joe Marmo/Wayne Lehto Ice Arena is open for the 2022/2023 season.

After a much-needed upgrade in the facility, the City of Idaho Falls Parks and Recreation Department opened the arena on Sept. 26. This past month, crews have added insulation to the ice arena walls which will allow a longer season of ice for the community.

“Had it not been for the support of our user groups, insulating the facility would not have been possible,” said Idaho Falls Parks and Recreation Director PJ Holm. “We appreciate their generosity to the Department and City of Idaho Falls.”

Idaho Falls Youth Hockey, Idaho Falls Spud Kings Hockey, Idaho Falls Adult Hockey and the Idaho Falls Figure Skating Club donated $21,000 that helped the City of Idaho Falls Parks and Recreation Department place insulation on the arena’s walls, something that has been needed since the building was built. An Additional $5,000 donation from Idaho Falls figure Skating Club allowed the city to install a jump harness to assist figure skaters learning jumps on the ice.Ice resurfacing

“It was an experiment this year and we can now say that we know we can open at least a couple of weeks earlier than we have in years past,” said Recreation Superintendent Chris Horsley. “In the future, who knows what it could be? Maybe a month earlier.”

Discussions about adding insulation to the facility began in the spring as the Spud Kings asked if it was possible to build ice and open earlier than Oct 1. After lots of hard work and working around the facility’s summer schedule, crews had ice ready to go and invited the many user groups ahead of the public opening.

“The figure skating club has been using it since. We look forward to the Spud Kings and adult hockey using the rink this week. Idaho Falls Youth Hockey will follow suit starting Oct 10,” Holm said.

Figure Skating ClubThe Joe Marmo/Wayne Lehto Ice Arena is eastern Idaho's premier ice facility offering high-quality hockey, ice-skating programs, and non-skating recreation and entertainment events. This beautiful facility hosts annual hockey tournaments and figure skating competitions on the 85-foot by 190-foot ice surface.

“This is a community rink and we invite everyone out to come skate with us. Especially the skating community who is eager to get back on the ice,” Holm said.

The Joe Marmo/Wayne Lehto Ice Arena schedule can be found on Parks and Recreation Department webpage or at Public skates are offered Friday and Saturday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and other times as ice availability allows.
