[ARCHIVED] IFPD Issues Reminders About Door-to-Door Solicitors

As temperatures begin to increase, so does the number of door-to-door solicitors in Idaho Falls. The Idaho Falls Police Department reminds all residents and solicitors about the guidelines set forth by city code for door-to-door solicitors.

Anyone violating these regulations and guidelines are subject to being cited for a misdemeanor.

As required by city ordinance:

• All solicitors – with the exception of those proselyting or political campaigning – are required to have a door-to-door sales permit within Idaho Falls. The permit is only good for one calendar year and expires on Dec. 31.

• All permits/badges must be visibly worn by the solicitor when going door-to-door.

• Door-to-door sales are only allowed between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. No solicitation can occur on Sunday or any legal holiday.

• Solicitors are not allowed to knock at any door that displays a “no solicitation” sign prominently posted at or near the primary entrance.

Residents are encouraged to be smart when doing business with any solicitor – whether it’s at the door or on the phone.

Residents should:

• Prior to opening the door, take a look through the peep hole or window to see who is knocking at the door. You are not required to open the door to a stranger.

• Only do business with companies you are familiar with or you have properly researched.

• Never permit a stranger into your home if home alone.

• Ask for identification and/or to see their city permit (if one is not visible). If they don’t have a permit, advise them of the ordinance requiring one.

• Call and report a solicitor to police that refuses to leave, becomes confrontational or is soliciting without a permit.

• Never feel pressured into listening to a sales pitch or to purchase a product.
