Offering Life-Saving Trainings for Civilians

Idaho Falls, ID: Providing and maintaining a safe environment for community members is always of utmost importance for first responders and healthcare professionals. Tragic accidents like the recent bridge collapse in Florida, and abhorrent violence in our schools and streets – from Parkland, Florida to Austin, Texas – leave us searching for additional ways to increase safety, prevent injury and save more lives.

There is one common thread for life-or-death injuries: the average citizen is the first line of assistance for the injured. Even in the best of circumstances and with rapid responses, it still takes several minutes for first responders to arrive on scene to render aid.

The American College of Surgeons says that up to 20 percent of trauma deaths each year could be prevented with effective and faster responses to bleeding control.

The Idaho Falls Fire Department and EIRMC have collaborated to promote a national campaign called Stop the Bleed. The goal is to teach civilians how to provide life-saving response to stop uncontrolled bleeding in a trauma situation.

The two entities are hosting one-hour classes to teach basic bleeding control techniques to people with little or no medical training.

March 31, 2018 is National Stop the Bleed Day. Classes will be held on this day at EIRMC and at the new Downtown Fire Station 1, 343 “E” Street.
