Idaho Falls, ID – In keeping with the recommendation of the bicycle and pedestrian plan Connecting Our Community, the City of Idaho Falls is in the process of adding pavement markings and signs to establish bicycle routes along 5th and 6th Streets.
These improvements will provide an integral connection between the bike lanes on John Adams Parkway and the bike lanes that will be striped in the next several weeks on S Boulevard. The City will continue to work toward implementation of the Connecting Our Community recommendations for increased bicycle accommodation and greater connectivity of designated bicycle routes and facilities throughout Idaho Falls.
This phase consists of the following:
The addition of the bike lane on S Holmes Avenue began last week and will be finished this week. The sharrow markings will be completed this week, with the bike lane revisions on John Adams Parkway completed within the next two weeks.
The placement of sharrow markings on the pavement is intended to remind motorists to expect bicycles traveling on the roadway and to drive in a manner that safely accommodates them. The markings also provide confirmation to cyclists that they are on the designated bike route and provides guidance regarding their preferred placement within the travel lane.
The improvements on John Adams Parkway, approaching S Holmes Avenue, will include the bike lane transitioning to a position between the left- and right-turn lanes at the intersection. Vehicles entering the right-turn lane will be required to yield to bicyclists in the bike lane. This change will allow bicycles to safely make the left turn onto S Holmes Avenue to access the bike route on 6th Street.
