[ARCHIVED] 3 ways you can stay safe and informed in Idaho Falls using apps

An increasing number of people are using applications and social media to receive emergency information and urgent alerts.

The Idaho Falls Police Department wants the local community to know how they can get this emergency information from a reliable source.

There are 3 main apps used by the Idaho Falls Police Department to communicate public safety information.

MyAlerts by AlertSense1. Are you signed up for AlertSense®?

Sign up to receive public safety alerts from Bonneville County, a free service for our residents. These alerts are provided free of charge, however, standard text messaging rates and other charges may apply from your wireless carrier. You can sign up on the web or download the free MyAlerts app today from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. Most of these alerts are sent out by Idaho Falls Public Safety Dispatch regarding urgent safety information in a specific area.

AlertSense® alerts replace the previous alerts we used (CodeRed® alerts) in Bonneville County.

(Alerts from the MyAlerts app by AlertSense® may include alerts from the Idaho Falls Police Department, Idaho Falls Fire Department, Bonneville County Sheriff's Office, Bonneville County Office of Emergency Management and the National Weather Service.)

Facebook2. Like the Idaho Falls Police Department page on Facebook.

On the IFPD Facebook page, the department posts information about significant events, missing persons, cases where police need the public's help to identify a person or solve a crime, and more. Make sure to like the Idaho Falls Animal Shelter page too!

Note: Please do not report crimes on Facebook. This is very important. Facebook messages are not monitored 24/7 and all incidents, complaints and reports need to be received by Idaho Falls Public Safety Dispatch. To contact dispatch, please call (208) 529-1200.

Nextdoor3. Connect with us on Nextdoor.

The Idaho Falls Police Department sends alerts using Nextdoor when there is a specific safety incident in a particular neighborhood.

Nextdoor is the private social network for you, your neighbors and your community. It's a great way for you and your neighbors to talk online and make all of your lives better in the real world.  While the Idaho Falls Police Department is able to post information, such as important news, services, programs, free events, and emergency notifications to Nextdoor websites within the city, the IFPD does not have access to read residents’ contact information or Nextdoor content which residents do not share with the IFPD.

Thousands of neighborhoods are already using Nextdoor to build happier, safer places to call home.

In March 2018, the Idaho Falls area had almost 2,600 users signed up on Nextdoor.

Now, more than 3,600 local people in and around Idaho Falls are using Nextdoor to:

  • Quickly get the word out about a break-in
  • Organize a Neighborhood Watch group
  • Track down a trustworthy babysitter
  • Find out who does the best paint job in town
  • Ask for help keeping an eye out for a lost dog
  • Find a new home for an outgrown bike
  • Finally call that nice man down the street by his first name
Nextdoor's mission is to provide a trusted platform where neighbors work together to build stronger, safer, happier communities, all over the world.
(Note: Some of the above information about Nextdoor was taken from Nextdoor.com.)
